A valley suburb, which you feel in the houses

Tarragindi sits in a valley running north to south with ridges on either side, and the terrain shapes the housing. Sloping blocks mean split levels, internal stairs and homes that were raised or built in underneath at some point. In practice that means more than one floor type in a single house and more stairs than a flat suburb, both of which we plan the visit around rather than discover on the day.

Modest blocks, extended houses

The land went to market in 1914, 1920 and 1924 in sixteen perch allotments, so the blocks are modest and the houses sit reasonably close together. A lot of the original post-war and mid-century homes have since been extended, raised or renovated, which is why Tarragindi homes often have more bathrooms than their bedroom count suggests. That matters for pricing: a bathroom adds more to a clean than a bedroom does, because bedrooms are mostly dusting and vacuuming.

A family suburb, on a family schedule

The median age in Tarragindi is thirty-seven and the suburb is built around two primary schools, Wellers Hill and St Elizabeth's. That is the household we are set up for: two people working, kids at school, and nobody with a free Saturday to spend on the bathrooms. Weekly and fortnightly are what nearly everyone here chooses.
